Please remember that all grass clippings and other yard waste are not to be deposited into any gutter, street, or other public place per ordinance 506-4. The reason for the ordinance is to show the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) we are making attempts at reducing the amount of phosphorous and other nutrients from entering our waterways.
We have limits as to how much phosphorous and other nutrients can enter the river from the wastewater treatment plant. The DNR considers the wastewater treatment plant as a point source contributor of phosphorous. Stormwater and agriculture runoff is considered as non-point source phosphorous contributors and have no limits because it would be hard to enforce. Grass clippings and other yard waste contribute to the overall rise in chemicals needing to be treated and for that reason we have the ordinance. If you have questions please call City Hall.
